Best of April Fool’s Day Jokes 2008

April Fool’s Day is over (to the great relief of the gullible amongst our contemporaries), so it’s time to check out what creative and funny jokes people came up with this year. Here’s a little recap of the best ideas:

- Google and Virgin Group announced the launch of Virgle Inc., a jointly owned and operated venture dedicated to the establishment of a human settlement on Mars. It has a very realistic site, but veeeeery far-fetched (in the true sense of the word)… Did anyone really believe this?

- Yesterday’s Thrillist reported about a new service called Punch in the Face. Based on the assumption that “people want to punch people in the face” and that secondly, “people are cowards”, this service allows you to submit a plea on their website to explain why the prospective punchee deserves violence. If you’re lucky your demand is accepted and the business is conducted for you, free of charge and with the proof in pictures. Hmm, perhaps not the most philanthropic of services.

- Possibly the most hilarious April Fool’s joke this year was Gmail’s new service called Gmail Custom Time, allowing you to send antedated emails to make sure your emails will never be late, even if you are. (This was supposedly made possible by an "e-flux capacitor" to resolve issues of causality by ingeniously circumventing the so called Grandfather Paradox). This could be useful for forgetful birthday card writers like me!

And to finish a slightly frightening report from The Times, claiming that a new Facebook application called Social Network Integrated Friend Finder (SNIFF) had been launched which uses cell tower triangulation to track the location of friends (and potentially unfaithful spouses, late employees etc). Techcrunch and MocoNews treated this like a real bit of news, but like nextgreatthing we are not sure – is this really a joke? Anything is possible though… Clues anyone?

Yes, the application is very real - the launch was announced on April 1 to coincide with CTIA, the annual wireless industry trade show being held in Las Vegas. Thanks for the coverage!
