Can Facebook Dethrone Google?

Recent figures show that the no. 1 social network in the world may overtake the search engine giant.

Perry Drake has obtained very interesting results regarding two of the most well known URLs in the world, via a website comparing service... It’s simple, on the Net in the UK, 1 out of 7 viewed pages is a Facebook page, and as high as 1 in 4 in the United States. Imagine this: it means that one website (there are millions) generates 25% of the overall Internet traffic in the United States. In comparison, Google only represents 8% of viewed pages.

In the meanwhile, let’s not get carried away: If we look at the numbers of visits and the number of individual visitors every month Google still has the advantage. But little by little, Facebook is catching up.

For Perry Drake, Google need to be worried as Facebook is on the up and up ever since advertisements began getting slipped in between the news, photos and videos that we share with our friends.

How do we explain these numbers?

Google is a search engine that holds over 70% of the United States market share and more than 90% in the UK, but it remains a tool that allows one to find something else. Facebook is a social network with 300 million users that use it 25 minutes a day (Facebook as a source). And this is just on average! No wonder that David has some courage facing Goliath...

1. The Facebook profile has become the "virtual me" of the Internet user: A real way of communication, conversation, socialization, distraction, viralization, a real place for sharing emotions, information, and opinions... the development of Facebook on mobile makes it available at any time, everywhere. One can communicate via Facebook anywhere, at any time, in almost any circumstance.

2. The Facebook profile has become the "virtual me" of the brand : The development of page functionalities/applications and the possibility to personalize pages and make them "microsites" that contain a concentrated amount of information make them perfectly adapted to the "ADD" consumer. Navigation is as pleasant as on a website, and the fan is kept in the loop as to conten via the news feeds that are automatically published on the home page.

In this way, there is something for everyone. Brands have access to a super defined target to promote their image, reaching a community interested by their brand that could serve as a trendsetter for other Facebook users. Users can create their virtual identity on Facebook, can communicate with and affect their community of friends, and can find out information about their favorite brands...

When it comes to getting Google out of the picture, that is not likely, as Google is solidly anchored in the habits of Internet users, and with a 21.8 billion dollar revenue in 2008, the Goliath of search engines will not give up easily.

Very interesting post and find the statistics facinating. Facebook seems to be huge and far easier and user friendly than for example My Space. It will be interesting to see where this goes...nice post!
