Postcard Word-of-Mouth Campaign
We are always stressing the importance of word-of-mouth to help get your products, services, and messages out to the public. A small investment in word-of-mouth marketing can reap big benefits, if done effectively. We often promote the use of social media tools and 2.0 word-of-mouth campaigns, but we can’t forget that regular OFFLINE word-of-mouth initiatives are taking place, too.
Despite the fact that 2.0 campaigns can reach a large number of people in rapid speed, we can’t forget the good old pre-Internet days of when our friends and family directly influenced our purchase decisions with their expertise and recommendations. Let’s be honest, those days aren’t long gone—I still use the laundry detergent my parents buy. We’ve just expanded our networks with the Internet.

Andy Sernovitz, author of the book Word of Mouth Marketing and the blog Damn I Wish I’d Thought of That, proves that creative OFFLINE word of mouth campaigns still exist with his post about postcards for book recommendations. The creators of the initiative, Jack Covert and Todd Satterson, decided to put two word-of-mouth postcards in their new book, “The 100 Best Business Books of All Time” to encourage readers to help them get the word out about their book. One is a cute fill in the blank postcard for readers to send to their friends as a book recommendation. The other leaves a bit more space for readers to write a personal message while recommending the book at the same time. The initiative is new and surprising enough that probably quite a few readers will send the postcards off to friends. How many people will buy the book off the recommendation is yet to be known, but we wish them luck! Hopefully the friends won’t just simply ask to borrow the book from the sender!
