Rampenfest: how to launch a car "to" America
You probably know the Oktoberfest in Bavaria, but do you also know the Rampenfest?
The Rampenfest takes place in Oberpfaffelbachen, a beautiful, dynamic agricultural village in Bavaria. Jeff Schultz, an American journalist, interviewed inhabitants of Oberpfaffelbachen for a documentary film, starting with the village priest who speaks about "the ramp" and how it has changed the life of the community. The question becomes, what exactly is this ramp?
Find it out here in the documentary by Jeff Schultz (parts 1 to 3):
Part 4 has not been released yet. If you want more information about Oberpfaffelbachen, check out its website. The idea of this enormous project, as you will understand, is quite simple: to build a 454 meter high ramp that will launch the 135i BMW over Europe and across the Atlantic onto the US shore. Crazy? Real? Many of you already know that this documentary is fake and part of a huge viral advertising campaign for the new BMW 1 series. That’s also why the fictive village is located in Bavaria - that’s where BMW comes from. This campaign is not new, but we still wanted to talk about it as it is a very interesting (and successful) example of viral marketing.
To make the campaign more credible, a blog and a YouTube account were created for the fake journalist. On Facebook the ramp already has more than 700 fans and comments from Oberfaffelbachen inhabitants.
On the Oberfaffelbachen website you can learn something about the history of the place, leave a message in the guest book and check out messages written by the mayor. A really well-done website with good, quality content.
Another example of a fake documentary released by Volvo in 2004, "The mystery of Dalaro", equally mystified web users.
