Skype Launches Video Laughter Chain
Nice initiative on the part of Skype to get people talking about their newest software version. The VoIP software is launching a new viral marketing initiative with the aid of The Viral Factory: The Laughter Chain! To promote its free video telephone service, Skype is asking people to submit their own laughter clips with the aim to create a world laughter chain video. Using their webcam and microphone, visitors can enter directly into the application in order to send their own laughter clip. This means there is no obligation to download the software. This campaign, simply run by a micro-site is making people talk because it’s both simple and effective.
As laughter needs no translation, this project can easily achieve world-wide collaboration. It is also interesting to see how this campaign can work to recruit new Skype users, while also introducing the new application to its current users. Using UGC (User Generated Content) when one has a big community (220 million users) is a smart way to launch a viral campaign because the first step is already done. So go on, have a laugh!
Google used the same chain principle with their email service Gmail. They asked Gmail users to make a short video in which the Gmail logo was passed from the left side of the screen to the right side. More than 1100 clips were sent in to make the final video, which already has more than 5 million views.
Check out the same principle, à la française, done with a heart! Warning, it just might make your heart melt.
