Twitter: 10 Tips To Get More Followers
Kevin Rose, founder of Digg, co-founder of Revision3 and Pownce, as well as investor in Twitter, has just published his 10 tips to get more followers on Twitter. With over 1,167,000 followers, he is the most followed user after Barack Obama.
Here is his advice:
1. Explain to your followers what retweeting is and encourage them to retweet your links.
This will allow you to promote your @username in social networks, which will give you even more clicks. In fact, you can even follow your own retweets using the retweetist software.
2. Fill out your bio.
The "bio" allows people that do not know you to learn a little about you. This field is also posted on the "suggested users" Twitter page. A blank or non-pertinent bio discourages people from following you.
3. Post links to your Twitter. Everywhere!
Post links to your Twitter profile on Digg, LinkedIn, Facebook, your blog, in your email signature and all you other online spaces. There is also a TwitterCounter button (much like a FeedBurner) for your blog.
4. Tweet about your passions in life and #hash tag them.
The use of #hashtags helps to find quality content more easily, and is also a good strategy to increase your number of followers. If people like your content, they will follow you.
5. Bring your twitter account into the physical world.
Find ways to push your Twitter profile in your presentations, podcasts, business cards...
6. Take pictures.
Photos are easily shared on Twitter. Those of the US Airways flights that landed in the Hudson were viewed over 350,000 times. Use iPhone applications such as Tweetie or Twitterific for photos taken on your mobile.
7. Start a contest.
@jasoncalacanis promised to offer a Macbook Air if he became the most followed person on Twitter. He did not succeed in becoming No. 1, but this strategy allowed him to gain several thousand followers.
8. Follow the top twitter users and watch what they tweet.
Notice how they address their audience and what kind of content they post.
9. Reply to/get involved in #hashtag memes.
On search.twitter.com you will find a list of the hottest current Twitter subjects. Join the conversation and use the #hashtags in your tweets.
10. Monitor your results.
The TwitterCounter tool allows you to know how many new followers you acquire every day. Qwitter notifies you if one of your followers unfollows you after one of your tweets.
Do realize that the increase in number of followers is not a goal in itself, but that is part of a strategy to obtain a certain objective you have defined. The goal is to attract qualified followers. Better to have 100 followers that are truly interested in what you tweet than 1,000 followers that don’t even read your tweets. However, integrated in a larger strategy, the measures recommended by Kevin Rose can be useful. Please do not hesitate to comment on your own experiences on this subject in the comments section.
