US Postal Service: Useful Augmented Reality
In order to make their package offers more appealing, the US Postal Service has called on the AKQA/DC agency to create a virtual box for its web portal.
The concept is simple. First you print out the USPS logo available on the website. You then point the page at your webcam. Using a system based on markers, a virtual package will appear on your screen. A little demo of it is available here...
Following this, you can then choose the package that is best suited for what you want to send. Upon choosing, you can have the box shipped to your home. The application in itself is nothing revolutionary, but it definitely goes to show that augmented reality will be used in other sectors soon... We recently spoke to you about a similar use for it in the Cannes Lions article. However, this is the first time that the technology actually adds another dimension to the marketing, that its not just for the sake of entertainment.
Although augmented reality is still in its developing stages, it would appear that its advantages are beyond criticism.
