Amnesty International Against the Use of Torture

Amnesty International, the NGO founded in 1961 by the British lawyer Peter Benenson which fights for human rights across the world, has launched an awareness campaign against the use of torture in China. Their campaign slogan is, “After the Olympic Games, the fight for human rights must go on.”

The agency TBWA Paris was asked to make signs that focus on the current human rights situation in China. The agency has used the notoriety of this summer’s Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to its advantage. The main characters of the posters are the athletes themselves, who are subjected to the most atrocious of tortures, right next to their sporting equipment or beside their sporting facilities. The dark lighting makes for grim images.

Being the host of the Olympic Games has many advantages—that’s why candidate countries do everything in their power to win the right to organize this world event. The Chinese government will certainly benefit from the revenue that the Olympics will bring in. This, in turn, will help the country continue its record growth. I just hope that the Olympics will also be an opportunity to create real change in the not so “fair play” Chinese policy.

Torture needs to stop. The value of one human life must be respected. I have a friend in the Darfur and he fights everyday to provide relief to the least, the last and the lost.

China is not the only country that practices torture. It is an atrociousty that this continues is this day and time. I believe the sick minds that dole out this punishment get a "high" from seeing their fellow countrymen suffer. The Olympics should be boycotted and never be thought of as a possible venue for any world class event.
