Amnesty International Clears Itself of Responsibility
A few weeks ago, we wrote this article on Culture-Buzz.com about a campaign organized by Amnesty International to speak out about torture and human rights violations in China. The controversial prints were designed by TBWA/Paris and gave us a lot to talk about due to their frankness and the Bronze medal they were awarded at the 2008 Cannes Festival. I hardly need to tell you that these prints were not well-received by Chinese authorities. In fact, Chinese authorities even called for a TBWA boycott. Amnesty International has since decided to disavow any connection to the campaign, arguing that the prints do not represent the message the NGO wants to spread in China.
TBWA Worldwide has said that this campaign is the work of only one TBWA branch located in Paris and does not represent the group at large. The head office also said that had it known the prints in question were being submitted to the Cannes Festival, it would have never allowed the submission. With just a few words laying the blame on the Paris branch, the international agency has washed its hands of the issue.

I can’t help but wonder if Amnesty International is letting China twist its arm (i.e. is yielding to pressure from the Chinese government) or if it merely thinks that the best way to improve things in China is through positive messages rather than negative ones that provoke the ire of Chinese authorities.
