Cougar Ad Draws Ire of Male Rape Survivors

Posted on January 21, 2010

I had this (apparently ignorant) thought that "cougars" — powerful older women that chew young boys up and spit them out — were a uniquely American phenomenon, at least in terms of nomenclature. (I mean, there may be many a cougar in Europe, but do they know they’re called cougars? Are the cougars self-aware?)

Anyway, Air New Zealand launched "Grab a Seat," a campaign intended to draw wanderlusters to its cheapest deals. To draw love to the site, it created a Steve Irwin-esque online video about cougars: "The Growing Menace."

Self-described cougars were invited to send photos of themselves and their "cougar mates" to win a flight and a ticket to a sporting event.

So much for that. Despite garnering 60+ enthusiastic entries, the effort’s been shafted because of "uproar" among miffed citizen watchdogs. But the quote that most merits mentioning comes from the country’s Rape Prevention Director, Kim McGregor: “We have also had complaints from male survivors who have been raped by women and they are very distressed that their situation is being laughed at and made out to be humorous.”

Must be tough. But in the unlikely event that you do need a cougar in your life, Air New Zealand’s apparently not the place to look. This dating site might be, though.

(Don’t you dig how they call the boys "cubs"?)
