Cuil: Better Known as “Google Killer”

Posted on July 31, 2008

The new search engine Cuil debuted online Sunday, July 27. This new search engine, created by Anna Paterson, Russell Power (both ex-Google employees) and Tom Costello (of IBM), hopes to compete with Google.

33 million dollars have been invested in this ambitious project which, according to Anna Paterson, indexes some 120 billion web pages, three times as many as Google does. However, this new search engine lacks certain features that have been key to Google’s success: maps, image search, and website audience measuring tools.

In some ways, we could say that Cuil, which is pronounced “cool” and means “knowledge” in Gaelic (an official language in Ireland), is the antithesis of Google. This is evidenced by the fact that the homepage is black and that its search results are shown in columns. This is very different from the monotonous list of links that the market’s leader gives us.

At the moment, Cuil is only available in English, but by the end of the year it is expected to be available in other languages like Spanish and French.

Here at Vanksen/Culture Buzz, we are looking forward to the multi-lingual development of this search engine. Although no doubt Cuil will have to make a colossal effort to compete with Google.

some of the suggest site cuil is offering is not the right content what I am looking for. I was search for bangla music and the sites are coming up nothing compare to what google is suggesting. I knew it because I am from Bangladesh. Cuil have to sort there relevency well to compete with a search engine like google. two of the most dedicated site for bangla music are http://www.mybanglamusic.com and http://www.banglamusic.com Both of these sites are more than 5 years old so there are no controversy how established these two sites are. As of Cuil these sites seems don’t exist in Cuil database.

The only way that Cuil it is the antithesis of Google, is that is brings up completely irrelevant search results, that have nothing to do with what you are looking for. If you want a real idea of what people think about Cuil, check out the technology blogs, not the press releases from the company.

Seriously, I’ve gone to Cuil’s site when it was launched and then again recently (first day’s aren’t always great, right). Neither time did I get the results I actually wanted. I’ve tried Live and Yahoo, both suck when compared to Google but are much better than Cuil.

I guess if you lie on the article’s title but tell the truth in the article itself you can still call yourself a writer...but I don’t respect you based soley on the title of your article. I’ll add Culture-Buzz to my blocked sites list.

Hi guys, thanks for your comments. The only aim of this article is bringing to you some information about what is happening in the internet. I am not a supporter of Cuil or Google. I am happy to receive your comments because they encourage the discussion. If you think that Cuil is useless don’t use it, that’s all. As I said in the article, we will see if this new search engine can challenge Google.

Uh, it’s not known as "Google Killer", in fact that term hasn’t been used (by anyone intelligent/informed) for years now. Goog searches 1 trillion sites and Cuil just plain sucks, to put it succinctly.
