Held Hostage? Register to Vote!

November 4, 2008 is just around the corner! And a campaign season unlike any other will finally come to a close. The Internet has had a bigger role in this election than ever before and I am sure it is here to stay. Candidates keep their supporters up to date with their blogs, supporters and detractors talk non-stop about the candidates on their own blogs, viral videos spread through the Internet like wildfire, media outlets even seem to be jumping on the Internet-started rumor bandwagon, and young voters, creatures of the Internet, have turned into THE target demographic these days.

Grassroots efforts are taking place on college campuses and on the Internet. While several groups are working separately to target youth, they all have the same aim: getting young people registered and to the polls. Hopefully they will be spared the bribing accusation suffered by previous efforts. If you’re not sure what I am referring to, you should check out Michael Moore’s newest film, Slacker Uprising. Apparently giving out free underwear and Ramen at a rally is equivalent to buying votes.

Declare Yourself is a non-partisan group that is working to get voters registered and to the polls on election day. The group has just launched a new provocative print campaign to get people registered to vote. Its message is: “ONLY YOU CAN SILENCE YOURSELF” and names as big as Jessica Alba have joined the effort. For any of you who still haven’t registered, you can do it online at Declare Yourself. Better do it now before voter registration closes. Now, without further ado, Jessica Alba’s print:

If you’re not sure why you should take the time to register, do it for the squirrels:

If these campaigns weren’t shocking enough to get you to register and head out to the polls, then maybe this Free Your Vote video will. It’s entitled, “Held Hostage” and that’s just what it does to you. Why not free yourself? You can register to vote at the freeyourvote website, too.

While these groups aren’t telling you who to vote for, we thought you might get a laugh at the following video. It just might help you decide to vote Republican like these good folks…or not! That’s for you to decide, but just get out and vote already!
