Honda Civic Music Road: Listen up...
Word to the wise: if you love the William Tell opera, then we suggest you head over to Lancaster, California and drive on its Avenue G. You’ll actually hear your car sing…
Not a believer? Learn all about it here:
The idea first started in Japan (see a BBC clip here) as a way to attract tourists to Gunma prefecture, 60 miles northwest of Tokyo. The idea is to use rumble strips to reproduce a song. The strips must be carefully placed (after doing some serious calculations) so that when a car drives over them, the driver (and passengers) will hear the music play.
Honda Motor has used this idea to create Honda Civic advertising. It has developed the “Civic Music Road” in Lancaster, California. While drivers were delighted with the initiative, the residents were annoyed at the increased noise pollution. The original work has been taken down, but it has been redone on a less problematic route in an industrial zone. By moving the musical road a bit off the beaten track, the new location will help avoid clogging up already busy routes.
