Mad Men Yourself: Create Your Own Avatar
Aired by AMC, the show Mad Men traces the lives of a group of men and women working in a New York advertising firm in the 1950s. Having originally suffered a categorical rejection by the producers, it received 19 Emmy nominations in 2009. On August 19th 2009, AMC will start airing the 3rd season of the show.
For this occasion, and because the series showcases women wearing graceful Marilyn Monroe style dresses and men wearing classic elegant and chick suits and ties, the TV channel has created the Mad Men Yourself advergame.
This game allows you choose your fashion by creating your own Mad Men avatar. You also choose your own skin color, morphology, suit and accessories.
I tested the game, which is definitely fun, but in the end slightly disappointing. After decking out your avatar to your taste, all you are asked is if you wish to share it via social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, or for your iPhone or desktop background.
Fans of the show may appreciate being able to relate to the characters and have a ludic experience. Capitalizing on interactive marketing by soliciting Web participation is important for a pertinent approach.
In the meanwhile, their technique doesn’t even use 3D technology, making it absolutely nothing extraordinary. Today, thanks to augmented reality, or even the Harry Potter game on Twitter in which you trap your friends with digital "spells", it would appear that AMC’s approach is not viable in the long term.
