Samsung Makes Sheep Run Viral

Samsung has just released a viral video to promote its new LED TV range. But if you’re expecting just another ad now, I’ll have to disappoint you. The brand came up with an extraordinary idea to make sure that its new product will be talked about: viral sheep advertising.

They simply equipped a flock of sheep with LED lights and filmed them being shepherded on a steep hill in Wales. The “Baaa-Studs” team, including among others a sheperd, a cameraman, and several sheepdogs, did a great job, (and so did the sheep, by the way). They made a sheep form different contours on the hill, played LED sheep Pong in the dark and even created the Mona Lisa entirely out of sheep (complete with the smile). See for yourself:

We love the ironic soundtrack – first the music reminding of a really old Western movie, then the electronic version of a waltz. Great idea, nice implementation, but: there is a minor drawback. The power of many viral videos is based on the fact that people are not sure if what they see is a fake or not, so they’ll watch them over and over again and send them to their friends. Just think of the Kobe Bryant videos for Nike (the Aston Martin jump and the snake pool jump).

In this case it’s obvious that it’s a fake — those digital images don’t look real. This might slow down viralization a bit. But we don’t want to be too critical because the video is fun to watch. We just hope that no sheep were harmed during the filming.

There have of course been ads involving animals before, with "sheep hotels" (see picture above) and also with bulls (read the article here), but not as ingenious as this one. Will sheepvertising become the new fashion now?

Funny video even if it is fake. The best part is the URL that accompanies the video (samsung.com/LED) doesn’t exist, so they failed a bit there.

Highly doubt that it’s faked; English sheep dogs are so highly trained and acutely responsive that it’s entirely within reason that the video’s real

Whether fake or real—although I do believe that Welsh sheepdogs have the ability to herd as well as would have been necessary-I haven’t found myself laughing out loud this much in a long time. The Pong game is just hilarious.

Apparently the writter isn’t old enought to remember one of the first electronic games - Pong - or ever heard it’s rudimentary sounds - amazing for it’s time. And the ’kitschy electronic version of a waltz’ is the fabulous 1812 Overture. Shepards and dogs can get sheep to move like this. Time to step away from the computer and experience real life, art, and music.

I’ve seen sheepdogs do this kind of thing myself, without the electronics. They’re a lot smarter than computers, you know.

A good sheepdog will do what you _want_, rather than waiting for you to figure out how to tell it what you think you want.

Those dogs are Border Collies, NOT "English" or Welsh sheep dogs, and good Border Collies readily could have done EVERYTHING shown in the video. My two dogs (BC) are eager to show their moves!

Blogger, get out from your cube and into the real world. "Kitschy electronic version of a waltz"? And do google "Pong". Sheesh...

Re: music for the Sheep Pong: Actually, it’s not the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky, it’s the Blue Danube Waltz by Strauss. :)

Both the Blue Danube and the 1812 Overture were in the video. The Blue Danube was the song played during Pong, and the vid ended with the Overture.

Entertaining video, regardless of how it was actually done!
