Sarah Silverman Backs Obama

The youth vote is likely to be more important than ever this November 4th. We’ve been watching how both campaigns have been trying to target youth. However, Sarah Silverman is trying to get youth involved in this election in a whole new way. And of course she’s gone to the Internet to do it! The Jewish comedian isn’t worried about getting young Jewish voters registered and out to the polls—she is taking that for granted. What she’s worried about is their grandparents living in Florida. In trying to swing the elderly Jewish Florida vote, she isn’t asking us to protest the butterfly ballot. She’s asking us to join The Great Schlep and to convince our relatives to vote for Obama.

To get us excited about her initiative, she has made a 4 minute video clip for her thegreatschlep.com website. The video includes the Sarah Silverman humor we are so used to (and sometimes uncomfortable with), but it also shows just how passionate the comedian is about this election. She explains why Barack Obama is what the country needs and also why he is better than John McCain for Nana, Papa, Bubbeh, and Zaideh. She also gives suggestions on how to twist Bubbeh and Zaideh’s arms into voting for Barack Obama: bribing them with visits. Check out the video below.

To help her get her message across, she has also created The Great Schlep Facebook group. You can even buy The Great Schlep paraphernalia! For gentiles and Jews without family in Florida, how can you get involved? Sarah urges you to talk to your relatives about why Barack Obama is a better choice for them and the country.

Sarah Silverman isn’t the first comedian to bring up the danger of the elderly Jewish Florida vote. In fact, John Stewart’s The Daily Show did a nice Baruch Obama segment with Wyatt Cenac on July 21st.

So, it’s clear that not only is the youth vote more important than ever, but the Internet is also playing a much bigger role in this election than ever before.

Hey, I love Sarah! In her hilarious video urging young Jews for Obama to work on their grandparents, though, she says that Baruch means "lightning." It doesn’t. It means "blessed." If you don’t believe me, check out this wonderful article by David Scheim in the Washington Post (August 28):

It’s well researched, with enough stuff about Obama’s name to impress grandparents of other faiths as well!
