Singstar: ’Sure, Sing; Just Sing Well’

We were really prepared to hate this ad, which features a peppy girl going about her day while slaughtering the living aerosol out of an oldie. But apparently Sony Computer Entertainment feels the same way we do about flagrantly bad singers, and they show it.

Tagline: "Si tu chantes, tu chantes juste." If you’re going to sing, sing well.

The piece is for Singstar, a Karaoke-style game where the better you sing, the more points you get. The campaign targets users between 15-35, and more ads, following a similar tongue-in-cheek trajectory, are expected to appear in the spring.

For its part, this video’s racked up all of 25,000 views over a handful of days via WAT, a video portal, but it also appears on Vimeo, Facebook, DailyMotion and YouTube. Decide for yourself if those figures bode well, but we can say with confidence that it definitely won’t beat JK Wedding Entrance Dance. Still serviceable work, though.

Nice sort of surprise ending. You know it goes one of two ways. You just don’t know which.

But an anglophone francojustbarelylector must ask, why is the tag not translated "If you’re going to sing, you’re going to sing well"?

I’d say this version of the ad was for the French market. Anglo pop is well-known and widespread here, so it would pass fine.

My neighbour slaughters "Wonderwall" all the time.

Oh, just realized you might’ve been asking why I didn’t translate literally from the French text. It’s just to account for nuance. =P
