T-Mobile’s Flash Mob Dance

Posted on January 19, 2009

Weekday mornings, Liverpool Street Station in London is usually bustling with commuters and activity. Last Friday, however, something very out of the ordinary took place. At 11 am, 400 dancers dressed in street clothes and station staff uniforms broke out in a choreographed 3 minute dance to a medley of hip hop, ballroom, and disco music.

Commuters were able to enjoy the surprise dance number and T-Mobile was able to film the whole operation (created by Saachi & Saachi) from several hidden cameras. T-Mobile has edited the videos and created a T-mobile advert, whose main message is, “Life’s for sharing.” The commercial was shown the next day on UK television and is currently being viralized across the blogosphere. The fact that passers-by filmed the action with their mobile phones additionally helped spread the word.

Starting in the USA, the flash mob phenomenon has become popular all around the world in the last couple of years (remember the Improv Everywhere Freeze in NY Grand Central?). This is not the first flash mob dance to take place in a London train station. However, it is likely the first promotional flash mob dance. In 2003, a London artist started the Mobile Clubbing movement, and since then London hasn’t stopped seeing flash mob dances. In 2007 for example, 4,000 individuals showed up at Victoria Station and danced to their own iPod music for 2 hours.

T-Mobile has taken a liked pop culture concept and used it effectively to create a very interesting commercial/viral video. I only wish I could have been lucky enough to have seen the spectacle live…I would have loved the surprise show that ended with everybody stopping just as fast and randomly as they had started, and continuing with their day as if nothing had happened.
