The Last Supper, Rat Poison and Flatulence Relief

First of all, I’d like to point out that this article is in no way meant to make fun of or offend any religion or its followers.

One of the best ways that publicists have found to grab our attention is by using icons or images that have been solidified in our mind since childhood. Our Spanish Culture Buzz previously published an article about different prints that were being made with the image of Adolph Hitler.

Now we turn to Leonardo da Vinci and one of his most well-known works: The Last Supper, which was painted between 1494 and 1498. Advertisers from two countries south of the border, with mainly Catholic populations, have recently made their own renditions of this most famous painting.

The first product is rat poison. In the ad, the faces of Jesus and his apostles have been replaced with those of the unpleasant rodent. The message is clear: it’ll be the rats’ last supper since their dinner has been seasoned with Mortein, a Chilean rat poison.

The second product is Stamyl, which provides flatulence relief by alleviating bloatedness, improving digestion, and helping avoid gas. The message here: the tacos and empanadas haven’t sat well with Jesus and now none of his friends can stand to sit next to him at the table.

Clearly, these ads are intended to create a stir. This reminds me of a scandal that took place in France a few years back with the following Marithé et Francois GIRBAUD ad:

The truth is that rather than shock me, these ads make me laugh. I’m sure that if in Europe people were up in arms over the Marité et Francois GIRBAUD ad, then these Latin American prints will give much food for thought…or not, who knows?
