Tropicana Transports Sunshine to Inuvik

In Canada’s Northwest Territories, people in the wintertime go weeks without sun. (This has inspired at least one sub-par vampire movie.)

BBDO/Toronto (@BBDOWorldwide) took advantage of that dearth of dawn. To kick off Tropicana’s "Brighter Mornings for Brighter Days" campaign, they hotfooted it to the wee land of Inuvik, which had gone a full 31 days without sunlight. There, and before the bemused eyes of the general public, they erected a 36-foot-wide helium balloon that they assert "[emitted roughly the same amount of light provided by the sun]."

A little sunscreen for that ego, guys?

Just kidding. In a time when you can send a chair to the edge of space to sell TVs, I’m sure it’s more than possible to replicate the intensity of our fair star to punt orange juice.

The ad above is a glimpse of how the town reacted to its handmade sunrise, buttressed by the gentle melody of The Great Escape by Patrick Watson (also a Canadian!). As old and young bask in the balloon’s warm artificial glow, members of the Tropicana team pass out bottles of juice.

Think what you will about the motivations of the work; this cheesy moment in advertising is priceless awards show bait. And it ain’t so evil to offer light-thirsty people a glimpse of sun, even fake sun, for an afternoon. (For another example of how a brand has brought its bounty to estranged lands, for better or for worse, check out Burger King’s Whopper Virgins.)

Appropriately enough, Tropicana’s effort coincided with Inuvik’s annual Sunrise Festival, which heralds Apollo’s return after weeks of unfettered dusk and dark. I wonder if he’ll mind having been impersonated at his own party.

Even though it is cheesy, and quite blatant advertising - the people there appeared to enjoy it, especially the kids, and I would be pretty ecstatic too after not seeing the sun for 31days, even if it meant being a part of an advertising campaign.

Well if it works then good on them...especically if people find it entertaining and different.

Was This ad even shot in Inuvik? I believe that they are above the treeline in order to get the 24hrs of darkness, and yet in one of the wideshots of the town there is a "forest" of pine trees clearly visible......

@chaddyb Are you saying Tropicana would ... lie?!

Just kidding. I Googled a few pictures of Inuvik, and there are definitely big pockets of trees, so in this case I’d say that’s Inuvik. I put greater faith in Google Images than I would on just an orange juice brand’s word...

I agree with Briefgold on this one. I would die if I don’t get any sun for about one week, lol.
