Web 2.0 at the Pleasure of the Army

If you’re a fan of war video games, commandos, or any game with an abundance of bullets and lots of action, then this article is for you. The Dutch air force has created a website to attract youngsters interested in a military career. The website offers all sorts of interesting information about the “Royal Netherlands Air Force" career possibilities.

There’s no question who the website’s target audience is: all the young men and women who feel passionate enough about their country to try to put a bit of meaning into their otherwise mundane adolescent lives by defending their homeland. And it’s precisely one of those young men in search of an adrenaline rush who welcomes us and guides us through the website.

For those of us who do not come from Holland, the video games are the most interesting part of this well-designed and very convincing micro-site. Why not become Tom Cruise from “Top Gun” for a few seconds and try everything out, without putting your life in the least bit of danger?

It’s not just brands and NGOs that are taking advantage of what web 2.0 has to offer anymore. So, now I’m beginning to wonder…if national armies are using the Internet as a recruitment tool, how long will it be before religions begin to use the Internet to recruit their new members?
