Footbo.com: The First Social Network Dedicated to Football

Social networks have sprung up like mushrooms in all shapes and sizes in recent years. MySpace and Facebook have inspired the creation of other networks targeting people who like all kinds of things.

Now, while the Euro 2008 is in full swing, a new network has entered the scene: Footbo.com, an international social network 100% football, created for and also by football aficionados. The website wants to become the “Facebook of football”, a niche market that is indeed lucrative if you take into account the astronomical value of Facebook and the importance of the world’s most popular sport.

In this new community, football fans can interact and exchange information about their favourite sport, they will find everything they need to communicate about it, from information about teams and players to upcoming game predictions.

The network’s members can also edit the information about players and matches, like on Wikipedia. In the << My Footbo >> section they can send and receive personal messages.

To mark the website launch, Footbo.com turned to Vanksen|Culture-Buzz. The agency organized a challenge: a competition between fan clubs, the aim being to make more people subscribe and become a member of a fan club within the network. The person who creates the most influential fan club wins a weekend in London with the opportunity to meet a football star. A challenge that perfectly suits the website’s ambitions.

In the last World Cup, Nike used Google’s Orkut engine to power their Joga Bonito network.

The site is no longer online but you may check the wikipedia

it seems nice, but I have to point out it’s not the first social network dedicated to football. some years ago, Google and Nike partnered to make a football-oriented version of Orkut, which was called Joga.com.

it doesn’t exist anymore (Joga.com leads to a "coming soon" teaser for JogaTV), and Nike seems to use very little of the "Joga Bonito" branding nowadays. but it seems like a valid enough effort to deserve the title of "first social network dedicated to football".

With so many social networks out there now, it’s difficult finding one related to your subject of interest or marketing niche. I find Google to be inefficient as it returns too many irrelevant results. The best resource I have come across to find niche social networks is the search engine http://findasocialnetwork.com

It’s nice and even has an updated version now. But it too spread and tries to do things that other more niche sites do better. Like predictions (BetUknow.com), blogs (OleOle.com), and forums (Vitalfootball.co.uk).

I think that footbo.com is way to busy. i got there and didnt know how to find the home page again, didnt really know where to start, i dont like that it doesnt have a landing page where everyone can just go recharge while not necessarily searching for something. like tristnap though i did find another site more worthy of the group aspect. its hooligansoccer.com you join your teams firm and support them through that with the title of being a hooligan
